Abu Sayeed Md Hasibuzzaman is a researcher at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) who is pursuing his PhD at the School of Molecular Sciences, University of Western Australia, under the supervision of A/Prof. Michael Considine, Adjunct Lecturer Md. Sultan Mia, and A/Prof. Nicolas Taylor.
His research aims to revolutionize apple breeding by developing high-throughput molecular tools for understanding self-incompatibility and optimizing pollination strategies. Apple production depends on successful cross-pollination, which is controlled by the gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI) system—a genetic mechanism that prevents self-fertilization. Currently, identifying compatible apple varieties for breeding is labor-intensive and time-consuming. Abu Sayeed’s project will develop cost-effective KASP genotyping panels and Oxford Nanopore sequencing methods to rapidly identify S-alleles, characterize S-allele diversity in approximately 300 Australian apple germplasm accessions, and generate the first complete genome sequence of Malus × robusta ‘Dolgo’, an elite crabapple pollinator. This groundbreaking work will provide apple breeders worldwide with practical tools for informed parent selection, efficient orchard design, and development of climate-resilient cultivars, ultimately enhancing the sustainability and productivity of apple production in Australia and globally.
Before commencing his doctoral studies, Abu Sayeed earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Gazipur Agricultural University, Bangladesh, and a Master of Science in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the same institution. As a Scientific Officer at BINA, he has gained extensive experience in crop improvement through mutation breeding, molecular marker development, and genomics applications. His previous work focused on developing semi-dwarf aromatic rice mutants and stress-tolerant rice varieties and understanding genetic mechanisms of abiotic stress resistance, providing him with a strong foundation in plant genomics and breeding for his current research on apple self-incompatibility systems.
Outside of work, Abu Sayeed enjoys exploring Perth’s beautiful beaches, discovering local coffee culture, and experiencing Australian wildlife, while staying connected to his roots through cooking traditional Bangladeshi cuisine.
