Melanie Wilkinson - ARC Training Centre in Predictive Breeding

My research has involved understanding the interplay between genotype, phenotype and fitness in nature and agriculture. I completed my PhD in 2019 on the molecular basis of adaptation and speciation in Senecio lautus. I found that the evolution of hormonal pathways provides a simple mechanism for the rapid evolution of integrated traits in contrasting environments, yet at the cost of losing the ability to mate with other populations. Since finishing my PhD, I have embraced the world of agriculture and has been lucky enough to work with the Australian Mango Breeding program. Most recently, they found that chromosomal inversions are harbouring variation for crucial breeding traits such as blush colour, highlighting opportunities to harness these inversions for mango breeding.

Within the ARC Training Centre in Predictive Breeding, I am involved in the soybean project with BASF and Iowa State University. We are investigating whether incorporating crop growth models (using APSIM) with whole genome prediction can improve the modelling of Genotype-Environment-Management (GxExM) interactions. Ultimately the goal of the project is to improve genomic prediction algorithms to accelerate soybean genetic gain for yield and yield stability targets.

We hope that improving the existing soybean model will not only advance soybean breeding but create a valuable platform for improving key legumes in Australia, such as chickpea and mungbean. GxE interactions are currently limiting the predictive ability and progress of legume breeding. By improving crop growth models for legumes and integrating them with whole genome prediction, it should be possible to better predict GxE interactions, and therefore yield outcomes.

Collaborating with a diverse team from BASF, Iowa State University and UQ has been the most rewarding aspect of my research project so far. I have been fortunate enough to work directly with crop modellers, soybean breeders, software engineers and quantitative geneticists. This opportunity has been invaluable, allowing me to learn from each of them and broaden my expertise.

Outside of work, you will find me cuddling my two kitties and cute border collies I find on the street or running around like crazy at futsal.
